Introducing Our New (Old) Car

There are many places (e.g., downtown Chicago) where you don't want to be driving your RV. You need a more reasonable way of getting around if you're going to travel through North America. The solution... tow a car behind, plant the RV in a campground for a week or two, and use the car to explore the local area.

Originally, we thought we would tow our 2010 Prius behind us. Because of the hybrid drive, the Prius can't be "flat-towed" (i.e., four wheels down). In order to tow it, we had to buy a two-wheel dolly on which we could strap the front tires.

However, as we discovered during our two-week leaf-peeping tour of New England last October, getting the car up on the ramps, strapped in, and safety-chained down required at least 20 minutes each time and some under the car work (usually by Jeannette).

It became clear that a year of this on/off routine would be a royal PITA. So, reluctantly, we recently sold our beloved Prius and bought a 2013 Honda Fit with manual transmission (and 165,000 miles to boot) that we could put in neutral and flat-tow behind the RV.

We had a tow bar installed on the back of the RV, and now we can get the Fit hooked up in 5 minutes or less. When driving the RV, you hardly even feel that it's there.

Interestingly, when we are towing the Fit behind, we use a robot auto-braking system that mimics what's going on in the RV.

Finally, if you have an RV with a nice Italian name (Ciaowagen), your tow vehicle needs a Italian moniker of its own. So we are happy to introduce...

...THE FITTATA.
