As you can tell from our past blog entries, we've been traveling - and seeing - a lot since our return West at the beginning of July. We'd been saying to ourselves that we should slow things down some and savor the places we're visiting. So after leaving our friends in Coeur d'Alene, we made a deliberate decision to spend an entire week at Flathead Lake in Montana.
Flathead is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the western US, almost 30 miles long and 15 miles across. It's what we would describe as a hybrid lake - created naturally during the last ice age, but then the lake level was raised about 10 feet by damming in the last century.
Having an entire week at one place enabled us to take care of some things that are more difficult when moving all the time. Things like getting your hair cut.
We also ordered some items from Amazon, knowing they could arrive while we were still at the campground. In addition to vitamins, supplements, and RV supplies, we decided to buy a two-person inflatable kayak. Only $300 and free Prime delivery! We were able to take it out on Flathead Lake and another lake in a nearby state park, and found that it was great at handling, stable, and a lot of fun. We also like the fact that we can get the whole thing blown up and assembled in less than 10 minutes.
One evening, we took a tour boat excursion on Flathead Lake, and were treated to dramatic clouds, amazing rainbows, and a beautiful fiery sunset. Afterwards, alpenglow lit the eastern peaks of the Mission Mountains.
Rejuvenated by our quiet week, we moved north for a more energetic week in Montana's Glacier National Park. More about that in our next blog entry.
It's nice to slow down and truly be a part of your surroundings for a few days! So glad you found the time...and it wasn't time needed to repair a car part! And, great to know about an inflatable kayak.
Flathead Lake looks amazing!! That is certainly a beautiful part of the country! Glad you were able to get a haircut too!!
